AT&T considering cheaper iPhone plans? May 22, 2009

We’re getting close to WWDC, which means the Apple rumor mill is nearing redline — today it’s BusinessWeek saying AT&T’s working on cheaper iPhone data plans. It’s not clear exactly how that would play out, but the most popularly-discussed option is a $20 “limited-access” plan potentially offered alongside a cheaper iPhone to be introduced at WWDC — an option that’s almost certainly being discussed as the two companies sort out that exclusivity extension. Of course, we’re extremely curious to see what “limited access” means, given AT&T’s recent SlingPlayer debacle — cheap certainly isn’t worth it if you’re not allowed to do anything worthwhile. Phil, you have anything to say?

Bluetooth transfers come to jailbroken iPhones January 29, 2009

No, no — bluetooth transfers haven’t come to the iPhone natively (um, Apple, are you taking this hint to heart?), but for those courageous enough to jailbreak their handset, you can enjoy the same spoils enjoyed by RAZR owners. It seems the final release has yet to be made public (it’s coming to the iSpazio Repository in short order), but if you’re ready to get your hopes up, a demonstration video is just after the break.

Until Apple pumps out the next-gen iPhone with integrated solar cells, we suppose Solar Arcadia’s solar-powered cases are your next best option. Available in both SideFlip and Leather Flip models, the cases not only offer relatively stout protection for your handset, but they also include a solar panel in order to give your mobile a few more minutes of life while you’re out and about in the sun. Each one is constructed from ABS sheepskin and is available in either red, white or black (Leather Flip is black only) motifs; not too shabby for $45.95 — just don’t expect this thing to dramatically increase your time of use.

iPhone nano revealed by (another) silicone case mockup? December 15, 2008

There’s something just a little skeezy about basing predictions for Important New Apple Products upon nasty renders of protective case mockups from China. Still, they’ve panned out astonishingly nicely before, so we’ll just have to suck it up. iDealsChina is reporting that XSKN is not-so-secretely working on a silicone skin for the upcoming “Nano iPhone” (or, more likely, iPhone nano) a shorter, chubbier version of the iPhone 3G. According to iDealsChina sources, the phone will apparently sport EDGE data, but otherwise seems unsurprisingly identical in specs to its forebears, other than the obviously smaller screen. They’re also saying Apple plans to sell these at high volumes for low prices at hip spots like Walmart, that the company will (naturally) be unveiling the new handset in January at Macworld, and even go so far as to say that leaked photos of the device should be surfacing in the next couple of days — we’ll be keeping our eyes peeled. Check out another couple of tantalizing case renders after the break.

Smartphone numbers are in: iPhone sales exceed Windows Mobile sales for first time December 4, 2008

Gartner’s latest and greatest analysis of the global smartphone industry is in, and there are quite a few interesting nuggets tucked within all those percentages. For starters, the sector still managed to grow 11.5% in Q3 2008 compared to a year prior, but that increase is the smallest since it began tracking. Of course, given the current economic climate, we’d say it’s a win to see any number not in the negative. Moving on, we see Nokia maintaining its numero uno status with 42.4% market share, though it did recognize a rare decline in sales of 3% year-on-year; as for RIM, its BlackBerry phone sales increased an amazing 81.7% in Q3. We’re also clued in to why Apple was rumored to be hacking its iPhone production some 40% in Q4, as the company has some two million units of inventory built up in the supply channel. Finally, we’re told that “for the first time (meaning in this quarter), iPhone sales exceeded sales of Microsoft Windows Mobile devices worldwide and in North America,” and beyond that, “open-source initiatives like Android and Symbian Foundation [are set to] challenge Windows Mobile’s licensing model in the short-term.” Need we really reiterate how badly WinMo 7 is needed?

Mobispine pens tell all about their iPhone MMS app, doesn’t exactly tell all November 24, 2008

We’ve heard a few things about the Mobispine MMS app supposedly being developed for the iPhone, but the company’s just answered a couple of questions, and we thought we’d give you a quick rundown. Interestingly, the app will utilize Apple’s announced but delayed push notification, which Mobispine says is due “pretty soon,” though carriers may use SMS notification in lieu of the service. The company says that the app will be carrier-branded, and that it will be up to them how much to charge you, the MMS-starved consumer. Mobispine says that the software will “probably” be made available through the App Store, “probably” because it’s still in some vague phase of development, and has yet to be approved by Apple. Just let us know when the thing is ready, okay guys?

iPhone firmware 2.2 gets QuickPwn and PwnageTool, of course November 23, 2008

In case you haven’t noticed the trend, when Apple releases a new iPhone / iPod touch firmware, it has a tendency to fall to the jailbreakers at mind-boggling breakneck speed. QuickPwn and PwnageTool have now both been updated to support 2.2, though there’s a critical note in here from the iphone-dev team: if you have any interest in unlocking your iPhone 3G in the near future, only use PwnageTool, not the more painless QuickPwn. You’ve been warned!

Orb 2.0 streams live TV to your iPhone November 22, 2008

We knew Orb was working on an iPhone port of its media-streaming app, and it looks like Orb 2.0 just stealthily went live in the App Store. The $10 app lets TV junkies watch live TV from a tuner connected to a Windows PC, as well as stream music, videos, and photos from their libraries. Even cooler, Orb allows you to monitor a webcam, so you can finally nail those Diet Coke thieves from the comfort of your cube (or keep an eye on your infant, whatever.) Sadly there’s no date for the Mac and Linux versions, but Orb says they’re on the way. Alright Sling, looks like the ball’s in your court.
