BlackBerry Storm update leaks to the masses November 30, 2008

Okay, remember that bit about waiting for a wide release? Yeah, screw that noise. Firmware 4.7.0.75 for the BlackBerry Storm has drizzled out onto the interwebs, and initial reports from intrepid updaters seem to be generally positive. We can’t verify the authenticity of this sucker, but if you were counting down the minutes until RIM got around to patching up issues and killing some lag, 75 might be a good start. Good luck, friends.

We’ve decided to end the Engadget Black Friday Giveaways with a blast from the past. Remember this guy? It seems like only a week ago that Apple was being accused of ripping off this LG and Prada collaboration with the iPhone. Ah… memories. Well, you can at least still impress some folks down at the local discotheque with this one — just make sure no one accidentally pours a vodka and Red Bull on it.
We’ll put up a gadget on the site, and you can only enter it until the next gadget lands (usually within a couple of hours). If you miss your shot, sorry, we’re moving on to the next gadget. Good luck! Oh, and don’t forget the rules. (Yeah, there are always rules.)

  • Leave a comment below. That’s it! Who loves you, baby.
  • You may only enter this specific giveaway once. If you enter this giveaway more than once you’ll be automatically disqualified, etc. (Yes, we have robots that thoroughly check to ensure fairness.) You can enter different giveaways in today’s Black Friday giveaways, but you can only enter this one once.

  • If you enter more than once, only activate one comment. This is pretty self explanatory. Just be careful and you’ll be fine.

  • Contest is open to anyone in the 50 States, 18 or older! Sorry, we don’t make this rule (we hate excluding anyone), so be mad at our lawyers or US contest laws if you have to be mad.

  • Winners will be chosen randomly.
  • Entries can be submitted until the next contest goes up. After that we’re all done. Good luck!
  • Full rules can be found here.

Rogers selling the BlackBerry Curve 8900? UPDATE: Yes indeed November 29, 2008

Word on the street is that people have suddenly (and rather unexpectedly) started to be able to buy the Curve 8900 on Rogers for $179.99 on a three-year contract with support for the carrier’s Talkspot UMA service. Why this wasn’t heavily advertised leading up to the release, we don’t know — folks seem to be red-hot for this release — but at any rate, you should be able to stroll into your local shop in the next few days and pick this sucker up. That eternal question comes up yet again: Curve, Bold, or Storm?
Update: Game on — according to Boy Genius, the Curve is now listed in Rogers’ internal database and retail stores are starting to get stocks. So what’s it gonna be?

Can you believe it? After two years and any number of missed targets, Meizu’s M8 cellphone is bound and determined to meet its 8 December launch date. As proof, they’ve shipped a first unit to China’s PConline for review. Hmm, white earbuds, charger, and USB cable… imagine that.

Nokia’s 5800 XpressMusic goes on sale somewhere in the world November 27, 2008

If you’ve been gritting your teeth and letting the PR onslaught of the iPhone 3G, Storm, and G1 knock you around as you waited for Nokia’s entry into the widescreen, touchscreen superphone market — that wait appears to be nearing it’s end. Nokia has gone and gotten all official and release-y with it’s anticipated (if somewhat disappointing) 5800 XpressMusic… or as we know it, the Tube. According to the company’s PR, the device “is now, or will be soon” available in Russia, Spain, India, Hong Kong, Taiwan, and Finland, “among others.” If you’ll recall, the phone boasts a 3.2-inch, 16:9 resistive touchscreen (hey, they throw in a guitar pick stylus), a 3.2-megapixel camera, 8GB of on-board storage, and the constant assurance that you’re using a phone once called the Tube. No word on price or plans, but we expect cheap, and lots.

G1 and BlackBerry Bold get the Colorware treatment, finally feel at home with your bippies and lightsticks November 26, 2008

As you probably learned in grammar school, there’s a time in every gadget’s life when it gets the Colorware treatment — and for the G1 and the Bold, the time is now. It’ll run you $150 to dress up your current T-Mobile handset, or the company will ship you a brand new one $725. Prices for the BlackBerry Bold run $139 and $674 for the makeover and the whole phone, respectively. Sure, that’s a pretty pile of change, but if you’d spent your formative years in the East Coast rave scene you’d know just how coveted and stylish a pink, blue and orange G1 really is. If the BlackBerry is more your speed, make sure you check out that sexy number after the break.

Nokia slips out 5 megapixel 6260 slide with AGPS, a first for S40 devices November 25, 2008

Peeped in spy pics on these Interwebs since June, Nokia just went official with the 6260 slide. Unfortunately, “slide” in this case reveals a numeric keypad not a QWERTY. Otherwise, it’s pretty much an iterative step beyond the 6220 classic. As such, we’re looking at a 5 megapixel camera with Carl Zeiss lens, WiFi, and HSDPA/HSUPA data to quickly share photos and video on Nokia’s Ovi service with the promise of support for other photo and video sharing sites you might actually use. The 6260 slide also features Nokia Maps riding AGPS — a first for a mass market, Series 40 device. Ships in early 2009 for about €299 before taxes and carrier subsidies, naturally.
Update: Detailed specs just released show a 2.4-inch, 320 x 480 pixel display on this 15.4-mm thick slider with quad-band GSM/EDGE and tri-band UMTS radios and microSD expansion.

Nokia’s QWERTY slider E75 spotted in the wild again November 25, 2008

In the “form factors Nokia hasn’t fully explored, but probably should” bucket, side-sliding QWERTY candybars ranks pretty dang high on the list, so we’re delighted to see that — as far as we can tell, anyway — Espoo’s still hard at work banging out the details of its E75. We’re told to expect WiFi (naturally), a 3.2-megapixel camera, and a 2.4-inch display, but more importantly, you’ve got a generous keyboard that should give the S740 a serious run for its money. We’re a bit concerned about usability on a totally flush keyboard like this (E90 anyone?), but hey, maybe that’s the reason it hasn’t been announced yet, right?

Mobispine pens tell all about their iPhone MMS app, doesn’t exactly tell all November 24, 2008

We’ve heard a few things about the Mobispine MMS app supposedly being developed for the iPhone, but the company’s just answered a couple of questions, and we thought we’d give you a quick rundown. Interestingly, the app will utilize Apple’s announced but delayed push notification, which Mobispine says is due “pretty soon,” though carriers may use SMS notification in lieu of the service. The company says that the app will be carrier-branded, and that it will be up to them how much to charge you, the MMS-starved consumer. Mobispine says that the software will “probably” be made available through the App Store, “probably” because it’s still in some vague phase of development, and has yet to be approved by Apple. Just let us know when the thing is ready, okay guys?

How much ASCII will be spilled, how much bandwidth utilized on this legendary (if vaporous) iPhone killer before it becomes a real reality? Like the tail end of a torrid love affair, we’re not even sure if it’s the phone itself that we dig or the soap opera that we enjoy so much. And now, hot on the heels of the hands-on video that has captured the imagination of the entire world, Meizu has posted a flash demo of the M8’s UI for those of you thirsting for a closer look at the thing. SPOILER ALERT: It bears a strong resemblance to the interface of a certain Apple product.
